6-28 november 2010
This year the World Press Photo, the internationally well-known press photography exhibition, will once again be presented in the Der Aa-kerk in Groningen.
The press photographers confront us with the reality of events, which take place here and elsewhere in the world. It also shows the impressive beauty of nature or breath-taking achievements in sports and the sciences. The exhibition can be seen across the world in 100 cities, among others in New York, Rome and Tokyo.
The jury selected as this year’s winner this photograph shot by Pietro Masturzo. It was taken on June 24 in Tehran, and shows a woman shouting from a rooftop in protest against the country’s regime. National elections were held in Iran on June 12, which resulted in a hotly contested victory for President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad over the main oppositional candidate, Mir-Hossein Mousavi.
Determined street protests unfolded in the weeks following the elections. At night, when the streets would have emptied, people would ascend their homes’ roofs in order to continue displaying their indignation. Their cries of “death to the dictator,” and “Allahu Akbar” (“Allah is greatest”) would echo throughout the city of Tehran.
We look forward to meeting you at the exhibition.
